The snake plant, also called mother-in-law's tongue, has upright, sword-like leaves banded in shades of green. Its succulent leaves store water, so it tolerates low light and missed waterings – one of the easiest houseplants there is. Available with yellow edges or in all-green.
Why a snake plant?
- Tolerates low and medium light.
- Needs very little water.
- An elegant upright shape that takes little space.
- Two colours (yellow-edged or green) and two sizes.
Where to put it
In the bedroom beside the bed, in the living room beside the sofa, or in hallways, entrances and inner offices. It lives in dimmer spots and grows faster near a bright window. Keep it out of strong midday sun behind glass.
Care in the Saudi climate
- Light: low to bright indirect.
- Water: only when the soil is completely dry, and less in winter – overwatering is the biggest risk.
- Soil: a light, fast-draining mix in a pot with drainage holes.
- Temperature: it handles indoor and summer heat, and dislikes cold.
- Feeding: a light feed once or twice in spring and summer is enough.
Please note
- Toxic to cats and dogs (ASPCA); keep it out of pets' reach.
Sizes
- 30–40 cm (yellow-edged or green): for tables, shelves and desks.
- 50 cm (yellow-edged or green): on the floor beside the bed or sofa, or at an entrance.
