The money tree (Pachira) is one of the best-known indoor trees. A sturdy trunk and glossy, hand-shaped leaves give living rooms and offices a calm tropical feel, and it's easy to look after if you're new to plants.

Why a money tree?

Where to put it

A bright spot near a window, away from direct midday sun. It suits living rooms, majlis, indoor entrances and office corners. Keep it out of the direct blast of the air conditioner.

Care in the Saudi climate

• Light: bright, indirect light; it copes with medium light.
• Water: when the top 3–5 cm of soil are dry, and empty the saucer; overwatering is what harms it most.
• Soil and feeding: well-drained potting mix, and a light balanced feed in spring and summer.
• Temperature: normal room temperature, away from cold and draughts.

Sizes

• 40–50 cm: beside the sofa and in office corners.
• 130 cm: a large floor tree for living rooms and majlis.
