General information about Navel Orange
navel orange is also known as the Bahia for the Brazilian city from which it was imported into the United States in 1870. These exceptionally delicious, seedless, easy-peeling fruits quickly attracted the attention of citrus growers, and within a decade the navel orange, as it came to be known, was the most widely planted variety in the area.
Navel orange trees, in general, are not very vigorous trees. They have a round, somewhat drooping canopy and grow to a moderate size at maturity. The flowers lack viable pollen so the navel orange will not pollinate other citrus trees. Because of the lack of functional pollen and viable ovules, the navel orange produces seedless fruits. These large round fruits have a slightly pebbled orange rind that is easily peeled, and the navel,
Tree round-topped, somewhat drooping, and medium in size and vigor. Sensitive to heat and aridity during bloom and fruit-setting, and hence restricted in range of climatic adaptation. There are a lot of things to love about this fruit-bearing tree. No wonder it's the most popular orange grown in the world. The fruit is sweet and has just enough juice for outstanding fresh eating. It won't make you wait long for your first crop, because it matures early. It's also one of the first fruits ready for the winter harvest. It's a high yield variety, so you'll enjoy plenty of the rich tasting, easy-peeling oranges. These are large, meaty pieces of fruit that are easy to peel and separate. The Navel Orange Tree (Citrus sinensis 'Washington') is not all about function. Form is definitely present too, providing your yard with aesthetic beauty in any location you choose to plant it. As you can imagine, the beautiful, waxy, white flowers smell absolutely incredible. They'll perfume your whole yard with that to-die-for, fresh citrus scent, adding to your outdoor enjoyment from spring and well into summer. Local songbirds will love to nest in the tree. Keep your eyes out for hummingbirds, they'll love those fragrant blooms!
